The female butterfly lays pale yellow color eggs. The eggs are generally 0.7 by 0.9 mm in size. After some days the eggs are the pale olive green color with yellow bordering then eggs are red and finally black.
The caterpillar of this butterfly has a black body with red dots on the back. They also have dark red legs and grow up to two inches in length.
The mourning cloak butterfly has a tan or brown-gray cover with two rows of sharp spikes. The average length of this pupae is 0.8 inches (2.0 cm) this length can reach over 1.1 inches (2.8 cm).
The adult mourning cloak butterfly has dark maroon color upper side wings with pale-yellow edges. They also have bright blue color spots in between maroon and the yellow edge.
The has gray color wings on the back side with same yellow edges. They have a four inches wingspan.
